Madonna and Child

By Connor Young

While growing up queer in a religious environment, I am constructing photographs staged compositionally to refer to classical Christian paintings such as Creation of Adam, Madonna and Child, and Incredulity of Saint Thomas. The subjects have been substituted with sexually charged homoerotic figures. From jock straps to glitter-soaked bodies, this once historically Christian environment is now an underground gay club. The subjects in Duccio’s Madonna and Child are now a gay couple holding each other surrounded by sticky melting Bomb Pops. Portions of their bodies are removed to reveal a red, candy-filled stump. Removing limbs of queer figures refers to the censorship of queer people in religious environments and creating the illusion that everyone queer is filled with candy; like slicing the arm off Christ in Madonna and Child and revealing shiny gummy bears. The sugary essence of candy is my fruitful way of pasting over the horrific gore that is my trauma from the church. Since I cannot thrive or be myself in these spaces, I’m removing pieces.
