onanism (a deeper love)

By Nicolas Thornton

I am an intrepid faggot, and through my work, I explore communal art practice, liberatory teaching artistry, and interdisciplinary, sustainable making. I see my work as a utopic practice, an ongoing effort to queer normativity, and a dynamic process of REmaking myself. The work I am currently creating emerges from an interest in masculinity, queerness, and gender. The combination of hyper-masculine, pornographic imagery with fiber art, in all its innate softness, is an intervention, exposing the flimsiness of masculinity and the inherent vulnerability beneath its surface. onanism (a deeper love) is a meditation on fantasy, fleeting encounters, and self-love as an integral aspect of one’s self-image, gender presentation, and sexual practice. The use of vintage imagery and aesthetics is a nod to the richness of existing gay male cultural productions and how they combine to create the contradictions of gay masculinity that are foundational to modern gay and queer identity. This emergent process of queering existing notions of sexual practice and identity, exemplified by gay male cultural productions, is central to the continued existence of queer people making our love personal, political, and revolutionary. Love here is of one’s self, history, and potential to blaze a queerer, more authentic future.
