Roma

By Devon James Darnell

I was born in 1993 in Danville, Illinois. During the first three years of my life, I lived with my South African father and Korean/German mother. Soon after that, my mother married my stepfather relocating us to rural central Illinois. After high school, I attended Robert Morris University where I majored in Business Management and minored in Architecture. My minor enabled me to reflect upon how shape, configurations of design, and color can bring new conceptions to my art. In Chicago I have spent many hours visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Art Institute. From these visits I have learned how abstract expressionism and the creative rendition of human figures can be combined. My interest in dance and music have also served as a source of inspiration for the varied dimensions of art. Finally, through years of introspection I’ve realized that my art also has been influenced by being a multi-ethnic gay man and the challenges that are associated with that identity.
