Intertwined

By Devon James Darnell

Art for me always needs to represent some deeper meanings about life. Accordingly, the bold colors of my paintings and the figures in them, all to some extent represent a wide range of existential themes focusing on the limitations of life, the non-binary dimensions of existence, and the conflicted aspects of what it means to be human, as well as the beauty entailed in just being alive. To be more concrete, the artistic process for me often begins with a bold color and from there images arrive within my mind that are portrayed on the canvas in various hues of color, a multiplicity of shapes, and the juxtaposition of human forms. An individual painting can take a month or more before it is finished, and in the interim, ideas unfold based on my personal experiences with current events and social media. In the end, I hope my paintings represent a vibrant expression of what it means to face the challenges inherent in this tumultuous 21st century.
